Jose Mourinho believes David de Gea wants to sign new Manchester United contract

Jose Mourinho believes David de Gea wants to sign a new contract at Manchester United after proving why he is "the best goalkeeper in the world".

United progressed to the Champions League knock-out stages on Tuesday night after beating Young Boys 1-0 courtesy of Marouane Fellaini's stoppage-time strike.

Mourinho thanked De Gea as much as Fellaini, however, as the United goalkeeper spectacularly prevented a deflected Ulisses Garcia shot from trickling past him in the 70th minute.

De Gea's current United contract effectively expires at the end of next season and negotiations over renewed terms are yet to prove successful.

Mourinho, however, is confident that De Gea wants to stay in Manchester and called on United's hierarchy to secure the 28-year-old's long-term future.

"He's a world-class player," Mourinho said. "He's the best goalkeeper in the world, and if our ambitions are to be a big club, to be a winning club, you need the best goalkeeper in the world and you need also some other players the best in the world.

"In this case, we have the best goalkeeper in the world and I know he wants to stay," he added.

"I know his agent is happy to do what the player wants and I also know the board wants him to stay and they are working on that. Hopefully, sooner or later they reach a good conclusion."
