Manchester United transfer news: Harry Maguire deal agreed with Leicester City for world record fee

Manchester United have agreed a world record-breaking £80m deal with Leicester City to sign Harry Maguire, drawing an end to protracted negotiations.

Leicester had stood firm on their £90m valuation of the England international until the two clubs finally came to an agreement this morning.

Maguire will undergo a medical with United on Saturday before signing a long-term contract and becoming the most expensive defender in world football.

The £80m fee surpasses the £75m spent by Liverpool to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January of last year.

Maguire was left out of Leicester’s squad to face Atalanta in a friendly on Friday, having also been conspicuously missed out of the club’s squad number announcement for the 2019-20 season.

The 26-year-old centre-back joins Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James as part of a £140m summer spending spree at Old Trafford and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad rebuild may not yet be complete.

United are in negotiations with Juventus for Paulo Dybala with Romelu Lukaku ready to move in the opposite direction, though Dybala is yet to agree terms.

Lukaku was left out of United's squad for a pre-season friendly with Milan in Cardiff on Saturday night. Internazionale remain interested in the Belgian, though are yet to submit an acceptable offer.

One of United's many centre-backs may also leave the club, with seven first-team options competing for two places in Solskjaer's starting line-up.

Maguire is likely to partner Victor Lindelof, with Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo, Axel Tuanzebe and the injured Eric Bailly all further down the pecking order.
