Manchester United transfer news: Alexis Sanchez set to stay amid lack of interest

Alexis Sanchez is expected to stay at Manchester United, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, despite his disastrous Old Trafford career to date.

Sanchez is back in Manchester after his summer exploits at the Copa America and played in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Blackburn Rovers U-23s last weekend.

The Chile international has scored just five goals for United since joining, including just one in the Premier League last season, since joining in January of last year.

Sanchez is United’s highest earner, with a basic salary of £350,000-a-week, which has put off potential suitors and made moving him out of Old Trafford difficult.

That is not expected to change before the end of the month, when the majority of European football’s summer transfer windows close.

“I do expect him to stay, yeah,” said Solskjaer. “There’s a striker there we think is going to be able to score some goals.

“Alexis has come in and trained well he is of course four or five weeks behind the boys, and he has not played apart from the one behind closed doors here, so I think he’ll see this as an opportunity as well to make his mark.”

Solskjaer failed to name-check Sanchez when discussing his attacking options for the forthcoming season, following the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Internazionale.

“For me I’m very confident that we’ll get goals from [Anthony] Martial, [Marcus] Rashford. Dan James will come in and create Jesse Lingard will get more, I’m sure we do have a different attacking set up this season.”
