Manchester United transfer mistake has cost them the answer to their midfield dilemma

Even when Manchester United aren't playing, the Champions League is always something to look forward to as it allows you to assess some of the other top clubs in Europe.

With United not playing Atalanta until Wednesday, Tuesday night's action offered me the chance to have a look at what was going on elsewhere.

Many people probably watched the pulsating contest between Atletico Madrid and Liverpool but there were plenty more brilliant contests on offer.

Of course, I still had my eye on the Liverpool game, but the match I was particularly invested in was the clash between Ajax and Borussia Dortmund.

Now, I know a lot of people probably weren't watching that game but I was because I'm a massive lover of Dutch football.

Anyway, that's enough about me, let's talk about the match and the fact there was one standout point for United fans to take away from the clash - no, it's nothing to do with Donny van de Beek, the main talking point concerned his Netherlands teammate Daley Blind.

The 31-year-old has been at his boyhood club for the majority of his career but did spend four years at United between 2014-2018.

During his time at Old Trafford, Blind was praised for his versatility after proving himself to be capable of filling in at centre-back, left-back and defensive midfield.

To be honest, I was absolutely gutted when Blind left as I thought he had the quality and the character to do a job for United when called upon. However, at the same time, I can't deny that it was nice to see him return to his boyhood club to play in front of the ultras at the Johan Cruyff Arena once again.

Ajax thrashed Borussia Dortmund 4-0 on Tuesday evening, a victory which means Erik ten Hag's side have now won 10 out of the 12 games they've played this season, conceding just three goals in the process.

Blind was awarded man of the match for his outstanding performance on the night. He had 92 touches of the ball, made 46 passes, two clearances, three interceptions, one tackle, won three ground duels, two aerial duels and bagged a goal and assist ( via SofaScore.com) - not a bad night's work.

His goal was absolutely sensational too. After striker Sebastien Haller had picked out Blind, the former United man caught Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel off guard as he fired a wicked left-footed shot into the bottom right-hand corner from the edge of the area.

Blind would eventually return the favour to Haller, whipping a brilliant cross into the box for the striker to head home Ajax's fourth of the game.

Should United fans really care about Blind's performance though? I know it's only one game, but when you put it into context with some of the problems Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently facing, Blind's performance is pretty relevant.

United's recent defeat to Leicester saw their midfield cut to shreds and there was no obvious link between defence and attack.

United supporters have been crying out for a holding midfielder since the summer, but their prayers are yet to be answered.

It means there's still a gaping hole in Solskjaer's team and when you look at Blind's performance on Tuesday, it's pretty clear he'd be an upgrade on the club's current options and could perhaps even have been the answer to United's problems. The Dutchman has made more progressive passes than any other player in the Champions League this season (32) and that's exactly what United miss in the midfield.

All clubs make mistakes in the transfer market and I think getting rid of Blind was a big mistake by United. Clearly, he still oozes class and is an unbelievable footballer.

Would we still be sitting here yearning for a central midfielder if we hadn't sold Blind in 2018? I'm not so sure.
