Manchester United training squad ahead of Astana FC fixture revealed

Manchester United were handed an injury boost ahead of their opening Europa League game against Astana with Jesse Lingard and Diogo Dalot returning to training.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was without Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Lingard, Luke Shaw and Dalot for the Premier League win against Leicester at the weekend but Lingard and Dalot trained with the squad ahead of Thursday night's game at Old Trafford.

However, Pogba, Martial and Shaw were all still missing from the main session in front of the media ahead of the game, as was summer signing Daniel James but it is not yet clear why he wasn't part of the group.

While Pogba and Shaw were spotted doing individual work away from the main group.

The United squad trained at their Carrington training base on Wednesday morning ahead of their first European game of the new campaign and a number of youngsters were also involved.

Solskjaer has already given a number of youth prospects chances the season and introduced midfielder Charlie Wellens, 16, to the first-team set up for the first time ahead of the clash. He is the son of former player Richie Wellens.

Mason Greenwood could be handed his second senior start and United defender Phil Jones thinks the competition will give a number of the younger members of the squad a chance to showcase their ability.

“There are some unbelievably talented young players coming through,” Jones told ManUtd.com. "That’s something we should all be excited about. Hopefully, it [the Europa League] is a great chance for them to showcase what they’re about.

“If they do what they do in training and in the games that I’ve seen them play, they’ll be absolutely fine.”

Eric Bailly is the only long term absentee and is sidelined as he recovers from knee surgery.

Full Manchester United training squad:

Goalkeepers: De Gea, Romero, Grant

Midfielders: Mata, Pereira, Fred, Gomes, Matic, McTominay, Garner, Wellens
