Manchester United top four finish and Champions League fate predicted by supercomputer

Manchester United are predicted to fight West Ham for a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo joined United this summer but the team has so far underperformed this term.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked last month following weeks of poor displays and Ralf Rangnick has since been appointed as the Norwegian's interim successor, however, the German has plenty of work to do, so realistically what can he achieve?

New research from FiveThirtyEight shows United have a 28 per cent chance of securing a top-four Premier League finish.

West Ham currently sit in fourth position in the table ahead of United and the data shows they have a 30 per cent chance of staying there. David Moyes' side are enjoying another impressive campaign and they knocked United out of the Carabao Cup.

United remain in the Champions League and the research has also predicted how far Rangnick's side can get in the competition.

After winning their group, United will play Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16 and they have been given a 40 per cent likelihood of progressing to the quarter-finals, which means the La Liga champions have been made favourites to beat United.

United have a three per cent chance of making the Champions League final and just a one per cent chance of winning the elusive prize.
