Manchester United told why they shouldn't consider Wayne Rooney as interim manager

Jamie Redknapp has told Manchester United they shouldn’t be considering Wayne Rooney as their next boss.

United begin their search for an interim boss this week, with Michael Carrick placed in temporary charge after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked on Sunday.

The club have indicated they’ll be looking to make an appointment until the end of the season, with Rooney suggested by some as an option to take the reins.

The United legend is currently in charge of crisis club Derby County, who look set for relegation from the Championship following a further 12-point deduction, having already been hit with a nine-point penalty for going into administration.

For his own part, Rooney seems to have ruled himself out of the running, having said he’s “more than prepared” to remain in charge of Derby — even if they’re relegated to League One.

And Redknapp doesn’t believe United should be looking to their former striker to take charge until the end of the season, and should learn their lessons from Solskjaer's tenure.

“I don’t see that, he’s at Derby at the moment. Has it got to be a former player, is that what they’re saying?” Redknapp told Sky Sports in answer to the Rooney question.

“It’s not working right now and it hasn’t worked for a long time. As an interim manager yes, but the worst thing to happen to a certain extent were those results that he [Solskjaer] got.

“Because once he started doing well, you knew he was the wrong man, he just never felt right, even the fact he’s done a nice interview.

“When you’ve been sacked by a club, the last thing you want to do is be sat in front of Man Utd TV and say thanks very much for everything. You just want to get out of there.”

Redknapp did, however, tip Carrick to take on the role until the end of the season though, but insisted United still need to target a big name beyond that.

“I think they have to be very careful. Michael might do well, Michael Carrick might win a couple of games,” he said.

“He knows the game inside out and he might end up taking it on until the end of the season, they have to find the next super manager.”
