Manchester United need to target someone who is ingrained with the club's history for the technical director role.
The club are in the process of looking for their first technical director who will push along with recruitment alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But, with nobody in place yet it looks set to be another window of uncertainty in the transfer market.
Plenty of big names have been linked with the role including former United goalkeeper and Champions League winner Edwin van der Sar who occupies a similar role at Ajax.
The Dutch side have booked their side in the semi-finals of the Champions League after an impressive victory over Juventus and it again sparked discussion that Van der Sar could be the right man for United.
Former United defender Danny Higginbotham told Sky Sports United need to recruit someone who has knows about the club's history.
"In the summer what needs to happen, I believe they need a director of football," he told Sky Sports. "That is the way football has gone. They need somebody who the manager can say to 'right I want X, Y and Z' instead of the manager having to go to someone like Ed Woodward and saying 'this is what I want to do' and then he is toing and froing. A manager's job is hard enough. Have a middle man.
"But I do believe that if they do bring a director of football in it has to be someone that is ingrained in Manchester United history and knows the club.
"It also has to be someone Solskjaer is more than happy to work alongside. That is absolutely imperative."
