Manchester United told which £60m player they should sign to replace Harry Maguire

Manchester United have been told to replace Harry Maguire with a £60million-rated signing - one of their former targets Matthijs de Ligt.

Alongside marquee recruits Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, key figures in the Old Trafford boardroom strove to sign a long-term partner for their £80million captain this summer.

They succeeded in that regard by luring World Cup winner Raphael Varane from Spanish giants Real Madrid.

However, the classy Frenchman has been limited to only nine appearances during his debut campaign - owing to two separate injury set-backs - while Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have deputised.

Amid that absence, Maguire has come under criticism for his performances with the armband.

So is the time right for Ralf Rangnick and those responsible for incomings and outings at Old Trafford to go back to the drawing board? Ex- United player Kleberson thinks so.

Speaking to Paddy Power, Kleberson said: "Manchester United must make a few signings at centre-back position, primarily to replace Harry Maguire. He's a great player and leader - but there are a too many moments that he just doesn't perform, particularly when one-on-one or up against pacey players. He needs help defending.

Who would you like United to sign? Have your say in the comments section below.

"They need someone faster, stronger in the air, that can anticipate what will happen and that will be able to stop counter attacks.

"I like Matthijs de Ligt. Manchester United tried to bring him in a few years ago, but it didn't work out. They need a player like him. They need to get someone in there to do a better job."
