Manchester United told what Southampton possess that they lack

Southampton showed qualities that Manchester United lack during Saturday's draw, according to ex-Red Danny Higginbotham.

United failed to take advantage after going ahead and were held to a 1-1 draw for a third successive game against the Saints, following Wednesday's stalemate against Burnley and the penalty shootout defeat to Middlesbrough that finished one apiece after 120 minutes.

It was yet another inconsistent and frustrating display from Ralf Rangnick's side which has seen their chances of finishing in the top four lessen further.

Jadon Sancho, one of the few bright sparks in recent weeks, tapped in Marcus Rashford's low cross to finish off a great counter-attack and give them the lead in the first-half.

But United were caught napping just after the restart once again, with Che Adams this time netting a fine finish across David de Gea that went in off the post.

It was nothing less than what Southampton deserved as they put in an excellent display at Old Trafford, quite the turnaround from the 9-0 defeat they suffered there last season.

Under the stewardship of Ralf Hasenhuttl, the Saints are a team that play a style and to a level that Rangnick is trying to implement at United but Higginbotham has highlighted two key traits that the visitors have that United lack.

"Same problems for Man United but Southampton absolutely magnificent," he tweeted.

"Every player knows what’s expected and great partnerships throughout the pitch."

As a result of the draw, West Ham United now have the chance to move three points clear of United in fourth if they defeat Leicester City on Sunday, while Arsenal and Tottenham have been given another opportunity to gain ground with games in hand.
