Manchester United told to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and replace him with Max Allegri

Manchester United should attempt to replace manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with departing Juventus boss Max Allegri this summer, according to former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol.

The Italian champions confirmed on Friday that the 51-year-old will leave the club at the end of the season.

Since replacing Antonio Conte in 2014, Allegri has led Juventus to five successive Serie A titles and two Champions League finals - in 2015 and 2017.

The Italian's success at the Allianz Stadium hasn't gone unnoticed and the decision to end his contract 12 months early in Turin is expected to attract the interest of several clubs across Europe.

Allegri has previously spoken of his interest in working in the Premier League but has announced he is hoping to take some time off before jumping back into management.

But in a discussion over whether United should sack Solskjaer and pull out all the stops to land the Italian, ESPN pundit Nicol made his declaration.

He stated his belief that the Red Devils should do all they can to bring the outgoing Juventus boss to Old Trafford, despite only appointing Solskjaer as their permanent boss in March.

"I know there’s the human element in it," he offered. "But really?"

”Who would you rather have as your manager, Allegri or Solskjaer?

"Seriously, it's no contest."

Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho in December 2018, initially as caretaker manager.

A number of impressive performances saw him handed the job full-time.

However, the Norwegian wasn't able to maintain his strong start at Old Trafford and United's form suffered a serious dip at the end of the season.

The Red Devils managed just two wins from their final ten games in all competitions and finished sixth in the Premier League table without any silverware.
