Manchester United told to make another signing after Raphael Varane to win Premier League

Former Tottenham and Leicester City goalkeeper Kasey Keller has told Manchester United that they will need to sign a better striker than Edinson Cavani if they want to win the Premier League next season.

United have already announced the £72.9million signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and are now set to turn their attention to the defensive department - with Real Madrid's Raphael Varane the club's number one target as talks continue to progress, albeit rather slowly.

The Manchester Evening News revealed earlier this week that the Reds are considering trying to add another centre-back as well this summer, something Keller thinks the Reds should avoid in order to free up funds for a world-class striker instead.

"I'm not sure. I'm not sure if [Edinson] Cavani can score the goals they need," Keller told ESPN FC when asked if Sancho and Varane would make United instant title contenders.

"He's done great coming in but I still see him probably in his situation being that secondary striker to play, come off the bench.

"Obviously there was talk potentially of a Harry Kane or something like that, or even doing a double deal with Sancho to bring in Erling Haaland as well. I could see that more."

Keller also has urged Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford to improve their consistency at Old Trafford next season, as well as Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea.

"I think Rashford has to have a better season, Pogba has to be more motivated than he's shown in a Manchester United shirt," he added.

"If he shows the same motivation that he does for France, for Manchester United, potentially [they can win the league].

"And then obviously De Gea needs to get back to his form of a couple of years ago."

De Gea has endured a difficult couple of years with the Reds, making several high-profile errors which saw him lose his place to England international Dean Henderson towards the back end of last season.
