Manchester United told to ditch Mason Mount pursuit and turn transfer focus to Moises Caicedo

Louis Saha has urged Manchester United to sign the 'very exciting' Moises Caicedo this summer, likening the Brighton star to Cesc Fabregas.

United are long-time admirers of Caicedo, having scouted him playing for Ecuadorian outfit Independiente del Valle as a 19-year-old. They eventually walked away from a deal and the midfielder joined Brighton in January 2021, since developing into one of the world's most exciting young midfield talents.

Interest in Caicedo has remained during that time and Erik ten Hag is also a fan of the 21-year-old, with the Dutchman keen to add more quality in midfield. Chelsea's Mason Mount has been identified as the main target, but frustration is growing after three bids - the most recent worth £55million - were rejected by Chelsea.

As such, United have reportedly made contact with Brighton over the potential transfer of Caicedo - a player that Saha believes would be a great fit.

“I can understand why Mason is Manchester United’s priority midfield target considering his attacking output and productivity, which is something that we need in our game," Saha told Betfred. "They need somebody that has similar attributes to Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen.

"However, Caicedo’s profile is really good and he can break the line in a similar way that Cesc Fabregas used to do. He’s very clever in the centre of midfield and it’s very important to have a player that has the capacity to recover balls in the way that Caicedo does.

"Moisés can also bring the ball forward and he was very pivotal to the great football that Brighton played last season. Caicedo would be a very exciting player to see in a Manchester United shirt.”

Any fresh approach for Caicedo will likely see them pay significantly more than the €6million they could have signed him for a few years back. Arsenal saw a £70million offer rejected in January and reports have suggested Brighton will demand around £100million, inclusive of add-ons.
