Manchester United told to complete £25m January transfer ahead of Chelsea

Manchester United can't allow Chelsea to complete the signing of Edinson Cavani.

That is the view of former Red Devils midfielder Darren Fletcher.

For the third time in four Premier League games in 2020 United drew a blank as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Burnley on Wednesday night - a result which cost them the chance to close the gap on the Blues in the table.

The absence of Marcus Rashford was certainly a factor against the Clarets and Man United have been linked with a move for the Paris Saint-Germain striker as a short-term solution.

And after watching his former club draw yet another blank, Fletcher has urged United to complete a deal for Cavani at all costs.

"It's a road they didn't want to go down because they've been down that road before but maybe needs must at this time," Fletcher told BBC Five Live. "Probably a striker as well, [they need to sign] Bruno Fernandes and a striker.

"It's at that case in time. If Cavani is available, there’s talk of him going to Chelsea… Manchester United can't allow Cavani to go to Chelsea.

"I'm not sure if he is, whether it's Atletico Madrid [he’s moving to], but if he's going to Chelsea there's no way Manchester United can let that happen, they've got to make sure he comes to Old Trafford.

"If haggling over whatever the Bruno Fernandes deal is, it might mean us paying a little bit more, but they will see that tonight as well, Sporting Lisbon will see the desperation from Manchester United and it puts them in an even more powerful position to hold on to the player and get exactly what they want."

It was confirmed this week that Cavani - who becomes a free agent at the end of the season - has asked to leave PSG this month, thus sparking interest from across Europe.

"Edinson Cavani has asked to leave this month," PSG sporting director Leonardo revealed when speaking after the 1-0 win against Lorient in the Coupe de France.

Despite Cavani's contract situation at the Parc des Princes, the  Manchester Evening News  have reported that any club would have to a significant transfer fee to land him.

It's claimed that PSG will demand in the region of £25million to do business for the 32-year-old has also been the subject of interest from La Liga club Atletico Madrid.

However, according to  The Times, the west London outfit are attempting to seal a deal which would see Cavani move to Stamford Bridge on loan until the end of the season.
