Manchester United told they should have appointed Newcastle boss Steve Bruce as manager

Manchester United should have appointed Newcastle boss Steve Bruce as the club's manager ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

That is the bold view of former Red Devils, Liverpool and England midfielder Paul Ince who feels Bruce or Mark Hughes should have been considered above the Norwegian.

Ince, who played for Manchester United between 1989 and 1995 before joining Italian giants Inter Milan, has been vocal in his belief that Solskjaer was under-qualified for the job in comparison to managers like himself who had more experience in the English game.

Solskjaer, of course, had an ill-fated spell in charge of Cardiff City which ended in relegation from the Premier League but he did taste success in Norway, winning three trophies as manager of Molde.

Eyebrows were raised when he was appointed as Jose Mourinho's successor at Manchester United in December 2018 but a return of 14 wins in his first 19 matches saw him rewarded with a new three-year contract in 2019.

He is yet to win his first trophy with the Red Devils but achieved a top three finish for just the second time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired as manager in 2013.

Nonetheless, Ince remains vocal about his opinion and he has suggested that Newcastle boss, Bruce - who has captained Manchester United in the past - should have been given the role.

"I thought there were better managers out there with more experience, like Steve Bruce or Mark Hughes, who could have come in and done a better job."

Bruce is currently in the second year of his job as Newcastle manager and has had to deal with intense pressure over his position.

Indeed, 95% of 14,000 fans polled last month by Chronicle Live wanted Bruce to be sacked last month after a run of two wins in 20 matches left the Magpies perilously close to the relegation zone.

However, Newcastle have since gone four matches unbeaten to open up a nine-point gap between themselves and the bottom three.
