Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has urged Manchester United to bolster their defence by signing Jan Vertonghen on a free transfer.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side face a straight shoot-out with Leicester City in Sunday's Premier League finale as they battle for a spot in the Champions League next season.
While United have their fate in their own hands, defensive inconsistency has been ever-present this season and it's widely expected improvements at the back will be made this summer.
That has led Jenas to urge United to make a move for Vertonghen, who is set to leave the club on a free transfer this summer when his deal expires.
“I keep touting him around everywhere but I’m sorry, Jan Vertonghen on a free is the best free transfer centre half out there," he told BBC Radio 5Live.
"If you can get Harry Maguire back on the right side and get an actual ball-playing centre-half as a left-sider, that little dynamic may change things for them as well and he's free.
"They’ll know what they’re doing, they’ll have a plans but defensively they’re miles off it.
“I know how good he is. It baffles me when I see him in the stand every week because I know how good he this player is.
"I’ve played with him, I’ve watched him and on a free transfer, it just makes sense."
