Manchester United told Raphael Varane transfer gives them Premier League's best defence

Gabby Agbonlahor has rated Manchester United's defence as the best in the Premier League, following the addition of Raphael Varane.

The Frenchman completed a full week of training ahead of United's trip to the south coast to face Southampton. Newly acquired Edinson Cavani scored twice, including a 92nd-minute winner, to help United achieve a 3-2 victory last time out.

Varane could be in line to make his United debut on Sunday. Still, it is expected that United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjae r will persist with the partnership of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof until his new £41million signing returns to match fitness.

Former Aston Villa and England international Agbonlahor is impressed with the addition of the four-time Champions League winner, ranking, with Varane's inclusion, United's defence as the best the league has to offer.

"If he [Varane] starts, I think they have the best defence in the league," Agbonlahor told talkSPORT. " Luke Shaw, Varane, Maguire and Wan-Bissaka is the best defence in the league.

"That’s what they’ve been crying out for in games. Lindelof has been okay but has a mistake in him. Varane doesn’t have a mistake in him. He’s no-nonsense.

"Maguire is the one who will play out with it, run out with the ball and who better than Varane, one of the quickest centre-halves in the league now, just back there saying ‘go on Maguire, you go out there. If you lose it, I’m back here with Wan-Bissaka to tidy up for you."

"I’m excited to see him. I hope he plays."

Varane was named on the United bench for their trip to Southampton, with Lindelof partnering Maguire.
