Lee Sharpe believes the signing of Jadon Sancho can only help Mason Greenwood develop at the club.
The former United winger believes playing on the right flank is suiting Greenwood right now, and says even the addition of a player like Sancho — still of interest to United after they failed to land him from Borussia Dortmund last summer — would only be a boost.
Speaking to MEN Sport exclusively in conjunction with William Hill, Sharpe assessed Greenwood's progress and the potential signings Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could make on the wings.
United are also mulling over a move for a striker in Erling Haaland but Sharpe has been impressed with Greenwood's displays in attack. The 19-year-old has scored three goals in his last three appearances.
“I think he’s done very well. He certainly looks sharp and bright, he’s got good feet," said Sharpe, who played out wide for United between 1988 and 1996 under Sir Alex Ferguson, winning three Premier League titles.
"He’s always, when he’s coming in from the wing, seems to have nothing else in his mind other than going for goal. He has that natural goal-scoring instinct.
“And I think for the time being that probably is the best position for him. There’s not the responsibility of being a Number 9, where he needs to hold the ball up. Coming in from the wing suits him: he’s quick, he reads the game pretty well and he’s scoring from chances.
“I don’t think you can ever have too many options creatively going forward. I think Jadon Sancho — as much as he’s still pretty young — he’s played a lot of Champions League football, a lot of first team football, so he’s quite an experienced player
“I think he would add a touch of class. He’s a league above most players in that position. His ability to create and score is phenomenal and I think the way United play on the counter-attack with his pace, he’d be deadly.
“And I don’t think that’s any detriment to Mason Greenwood. I think it’s fine being in and out of the team while he’s still young, like we’ve seen with players like [Phil] Foden at City. Different players bring different problems and you need different solutions.”
