Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has said that Villa midfielder John McGinn would ‘walk into’ the Manchester United midfield, amid criticism of Fred’s performance against Everton.
Fred was named in the starting eleven against the Toffees but was United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that the Brazilian was ‘outmuscled’ in the Premier League clash.
It was Fred who lost the ball against Demarai Gray, allowing the Everton man to help set up the equalising goal when they broke in the second half.
The midfielder has been criticised for his performance and Agbonlahor is the latest to give his thoughts on Fred and send a plea over Donny van de Beek to Solskjaer.
“I say it every time I see him play, McTominay is a better version of Fred, just when Fred gets on the ball he gives the ball away, he’ll play sloppy passes when trying to build attacks, he’ll kick it out of play or to the opposition,” he told TalkSPORT.
“Even when he’s in there to win the ball back like Allan does, like Doucoure does, Fred doesn’t do that. I just don’t see why he’s in that Manchester United team, I’d rather Lingard in there all day or give van de Beek a chance.”
Much has been made over the midfield options available to Solskjaer, and Agbonlahor has named one player who would improve that area of the side.
“There’s a lot of central midfielders that walk into the Manchester United team,” he added.
“John McGinn would walk into that Manchester United midfield.”
McGinn has been a key player for Villa since their return to the Premier League, the Scotland international has played in five of six league clashes so far this season, missing the other after a positive Covid test.
