Manchester United to pay all employees above real living wage

Manchester United have committed to paying all employees at the club above the real living wage.

Last week the club sent a message out to all casual and permanent employees, over 1,000 people, to communicate that they would be upping their wage to £10 per hour after calls for them to at least match the living wage.

United were one of the sides that didn't use the furlough scheme during the COVID-19 pandemic last year, instead choosing to pay their employees 100 percent of their wage, despite the lack of work available at the time.

The real living wage outside of London is put at £9.50 per hour, but United are ensuring that all employees will be paid at least £10 per hour.

United's chief operating officer Collette Roche spoke about the changes, stating:

"Taking care of our colleagues is a priority for us and we took the decision early in the pandemic to help provide security through goodwill payments to many of our casual staff.

“We were also able to repurpose some roles to allow colleagues to volunteer to help with community initiatives.

“Now fans are able to return to stadiums and our matchday staff are able to return to their roles we have reviewed hourly salaries to make sure there is a minimum £10 per hour across the board, and we’re looking forward to the season to come.”

Manchester United hosted their first capacity crowd since March 2020 this past weekend, with over 72,000 fans present for the team's 5-1 win over Leeds in the opening Premier League game of the season.
