Manchester United 'to offer first-team player unlikely new deal'

Manchester United are looking to avoid losing Matteo Darmian for free at the end of next season by offering the full-back a new four-year deal at Old Trafford, according to reports in Italy.

The 29-year-old is known to want a move back to Serie A but United are said to be preparing a package to ensure a sell-on fee is acquired for the 36-times-capped Italy international.

The Reds triggered a clause in Darmian's contract earlier this season that tied the former Torino defender to Old Trafford until the end of the next campaign.

Darmian will be eligible to negotiate with foreign clubs when he enters the final six months of his deal in January but United are reported to be keen for him to pen a new deal at the club to stave off growing interest from Inter Milan, whom Gazzetta dello Sport claim are keen on a free transfer.

United were willing to let Darmian leave the club last summer but were unable to find a club willing to pay the desired fee.

And Darmian, whom Louis Van Gaal signed in the summer of 2015, admitted in December that he was ready for a return to Italy.

"I must say, I really do miss Serie A and Italy now," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I know that I am at one of the best clubs in the world and I am proud to be at Manchester United, but I do miss Italy. I love my country.

"Returning to play for Italy is my objective. Roberto Mancini (Italy head coach) hasn't called me up yet, but I hope he will in future."

Meanwhile, United are said to have dropped their interest in the Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and will instead pursue a move for Paris Saint-Germain's Thomas Meunier.

Diogo Dalot's form in recent weeks is reported by the Sun to be behind the apparent decision to up their interest in Belgium international Meunier, who has made 28 appearances for the French champions this season.

It is the MEN's understanding, however, that Wan-Bissaka is of the profile of player desired by Reds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this summer.
