Manchester United to make 'shock transfer bid' for Championship midfielder

Manchester United are set to make a 'shock transfer bid' for Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, according to reports.

After completing the signing of right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, United have now switched focus to bringing a new midfielder to Old Trafford as they look to fill the whole left by the departing Ander Herrera.

United have been linked with a whole host of names and are interested in Sporting's Bruno Fernandes and Sean Longstaff of Newcastle United.

McGinn is the latest name to be thrown into the ring after the all-action midfielder had a fine debut season in England, which was capped off by scoring in the play-off final as Aston Villa returned to the Premier League.

The Scot won the fans' player and players' player of the season and The Sun report that United are to make a 'shock transfer bid.'

At 24-years-old and clearly talented McGinn is a player who would fit into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's new transfer strategy, as the club look to move away from signing big names to young, motivated, preferably British, players.

It's claimed that United 'have made background checks ahead of their opening offer' but Villa are in no mood to let one of their most important players leave ahead of the battle for Premier League survival and he 'will cost £50million.'

McGinn cost Villa a mere £2.75million just last summer, as he transferred from Scottish side Hibernian and it's reported that Villa 'are plotting to tie him down to a new long-term contract.'

Elsewhere, United are reportedly battling Liverpool and Arsenal for the signature of Borussia Dortmund starlet Jacob Brunn Larsen.

The Danish wonderkid has emerged alongside Jadon Sancho at Dortmund in the past 12 months and The Sun claim several Premier League clubs are interested in acquiring his services.

It is claimed Dortmund want big offers to consider selling the 20-year-old.
