Manchester United to face Real Madrid in Youth League

Manchester United will face Real Madrid in the Uefa Youth League after the draw for the tournament was made on Wednesday morning.

United will be at home to the current holders of the competition in a single-legged knockout tie which will be held at the start of March.

Ties for the round of 64 are set to take place on either Tuesday 2 March or Wednesday 3 March.

United qualified for the Youth League as a result of the senior side's qualification for the Champions League tournament last season.

However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic the tournament was rescheduled until the New Year with a new format adopted rather than the previous one, which largely mirrored the Champions League tournament.

United were only eligible to draw sides who had qualified via the Champions League path, while another 32 domestic champions face each other in the domestic champions path.

If Nicky Butt's side are successful in the home tie against holder Madrid they will go into the round of 32 draw on 12 March, although they again will only be able to face any sides from their half of the draw.

From the round of 16 onward the Youth League is no longer seeded with teams able to face any side still remaining in the competition irrespective of their qualification pathway.

The semi-finals and final for the tournament will take place in May at a mini tournament hosted at the Colovray Stadium in Nyon.
