Manchester United to face Luton Town in Carabao Cup third round

Manchester United will face Luton Town in the Carabao Cup third round next week, it's been confirmed.

United already knew that they'd be playing Luton or their Championship rivals Reading upon their entry in the competition, after the second and third round draws were held back-to-back earlier this month.

The match will be played at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday, September 22, with kick-off coming at 7:45pm.

The Hatters earned the right to face United after a 1-0 victory at The Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night, thanks to a first-half goal from from Jordan Clark.

It will be the first time the two teams have met in competitive action since 1992, with that game finishing a 1-1 draw in the old first division.

United will be aiming to go a step further in the League Cup this season and make the Wembley final after losing out in the semi-final last season to bitter rivals Manchester City over two legs.

The competition presents Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with the chance to win his first piece of silverware as United boss, after the club also lost semi-finals in the FA Cup and Europa League in the previous campaign.

Sir Alex Ferguson won the League Cup on four occasions with United in 1992, 2006, 2009, and 2010. In three of those four seasons the League Cup was United's only silverware.
