Manchester United 'to compete with West Ham for Moussa Dembele' and more transfer rumours

Manchester United are in a two-horse race with West Ham United to sign Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, according to reports.

United have been looking to bring long-term striking reinforcements into the club for the last two windows but have instead been forced to settle on short-term alternatives.

Erling Braut Haaland was a target in January but United opted against making a move after they refused to agree to a buyout clause and percentage of future sales. The Norwegian instead joined Borussia Dortmund and Odion Ighalo arrived at Old Trafford on loan.

After being linked with several strikers throughout the summer, United eventually brought veteran Edinson Cavani in on a one-year deal after he was released by Paris Saint-Germain.

One striker United have been repeatedly linked with is Dembele, who has impressed since returning to his native France but has fallen out of favour and has failed to score so far this season.

That apparently hasn't stopped United's interest, however, as The Sun report that United remain keen on the 24-year-old, as well as West Ham.

It's reported that Lyon would be willing to sell Dembele, but would be demanding a £30million fee plus bonuses.

Goalkeeper Sergio Romero is reportedly hoping to leave United on a free transfer in January, after he did not get his summer exit.

That is according to The Sun, who claim Romero is now training alone at Carrington in an attempt to push through a move. He almost moved to Everton on deadline day and has recently been in talks with MLS clubs, but remains at Old Trafford.

His contract expires next summer but it’s reported the Argentinian hopes United will let him leave for nothing in the winter.
