Manchester United to bid for Pau Torres in January and more transfer rumours

Manchester United are planning to bid for Villarreal defender Pau Torres in the January transfer window, according to reports.

United were linked with a host of defenders during the recently closed summer window but did not add a new centre-back to their ranks. The club sold Chris Smalling to Roma but failed to offload Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo which prevented them from strengthening their backline.

Following United's poor start to the season and the 6-1 defeat by Tottenham, many believe United need to sign a new central defender and Spanish outlet Todofichajes claim United hold an interest in Villarreal star Torres.

The 23-year-old graduated from the club's youth academy and is now considered an important player under Unai Emery, making 34 La Liga appearances last season.

Match preview: Newcastle v Manchester United

Torres, who was a target for Manchester City over the summer, is reportedly wanted by United in January but the Reds could face competition from Arsenal as Mikel Arteta is said to be keen to sign the Spain international.

MEN Sport understands Torres is not a priority target for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Elsewhere, reports in Germany suggest Borussia Dortmund will refuse to negotiate with United over a move for Jadon Sancho in the winter window.

Sancho was a priority target for United and MEN Sport understands the England international agreed personal terms on a move to Old Trafford.

United were unwilling to meet Dortmund's valuation but could revive their interest in the 20-year-old when the window reopens in January.

However, Bild claim Dortmund will not negotiate with United as they have no intention of selling Sancho, even for their €120million valuation.

The report adds Dortmund will only sell Sancho next summer when more potential suitors can come forward.
