Manchester United to be offered Samuel Umtiti for free and more transfer rumours

Manchester United could be offered the chance to sign Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti for free this summer - according to reports.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to trim his defensive options this summer with Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones all allowed to depart. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been Solskjaer's preferred defensive partnership but the Reds continue to be linked with centre-backs this summer.

United were linked with Gabriel Magalhaes prior to his move to Arsenal but MEN Sport understand the club were never interested in the Brazilian.

The Reds have long been linked with a move for Umtiti who has been plagued with injuries since leaving Lyon for Barcelona in 2016.

Various reports claim Barcelona will look to sell the Frenchman this summer, with United named as a potential suitor. Spanish outlet Cadena Ser believe the La Liga side are keen to get his wages off their books and could release him on a free.

Umtiti is under contract until 2023 but Barcelona are ready to take drastic measures to lower their wage bill, allowing United to sign him for nothing.

MEN Sport understand the defender is not a priority target for United.

Elsewhere, Chelsea have been linked with a move for Sergio Romero.

Romero, 33, is expected to leave United following the return of Dean Henderson who will stay at the club next season to challenge David de Gea for a starting berth at Old Trafford.

Chelsea are in the market for a new goalkeeper as a result of Kepa Arrizabalaga's poor performances under Frank Lampard and The Athletic report Romero is on their list of targets.

The Argentine is viewed as a cheaper option than the club's alternative targets.
