Manchester United to battle Liverpool FC to sign Nicolo Barella and more transfer rumours

Manchester United have set their sights on Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella following his impressive start to the season - reports claim.

Barella, 23, initially joined the Italian giants on loan before making his stay permanent after cementing his position as a key player under Antonio Conte.

The youngster has made a blistering start to the new campaign and grabbed the headlines in midweek with an eye-catching assist during Inter's narrow defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Italian outlet FcInterNews claim Barella is attracting interest from Premier League clubs including United, Arsenal and Liverpool. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also credited with an interest in the Italian.

Manchester United writers discuss Solskjaer's future and Pochettino

Barella is under contract until 2024 and United are well stocked in central midfielder. However, Paul Pogba's potential departure could see United opt to add another midfield to their ranks though MEN Sport understand Barella is not a priority target.

United and Inter Milan have a strong relationship with Ashley Young, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku all swapping England for Italy in recent seasons.

Elsewhere, reports in Germany claim United failed with a last-minute bid to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby in the summer transfer window.

Bild claim the 21-year-old became United's main target during the closing stages of the window having failed to land Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

The report adds United were willing to pay £45million to sign the winger who has impressed in the Bundesliga.

However, Leverkusen were not keen to sell their star forward after losing Kai Havertz which forced United to turn their attentions to signing Amad Diallo from Atalanta.
