Manchester United to assess Raphael Varane injury as Marcus Rashford gets the all-clear

Varane injury to be assessed

Manchester United will assess Raphael Varane’s thigh injury when he returns from international duty this week.

The 28-year-old was forced off during the first half of France’s Nations League final victory over Spain on Sunday.

His potential absence poses a problem for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has been without skipper Harry Maguire for the last two games due to injury.

If both first-choice centre-backs are unavailable Solskjaer could choose to recall Phil Jones to United’s matchday squad for the first time since February 17 2020.

Rashford in a 'better place'

Marcus Rashford has revealed that he’s in a better place ‘physically and mentally’ as he prepares to return from injury.

The 23-year-old has been one of United’s most consistent players in recent years and notched an impressive 21 goals and 15 assists last season.

Rashford had to battle through the pain barrier due to a shoulder injury during the last campaign, and it was subsequently decided that he would undergo an operation over the summer.

"My recovery is — I wouldn't say coming to an end because obviously I have to keep looking after it — but I'm in a much better place physically and mentally,”

United reviewing loan deals

The Red Devils are reviewing the success of current loan deals and may make changes in the upcoming January transfer window.

The club let as many as 15 players depart Old Trafford on loan over the summer, with the intention of giving their young stars a platform to gain experience at varying levels.

Academy graduates such as James Garner and Ethan Laird joined Football League sides, whilst the likes of Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams both remained in the Premier League.

Most players have now had around two months at their new clubs and United are currently checking on the success and progress of those initial loans as part of their development checks.
