Manchester United to add sports psychologist to Ralf Rangnick's coaching staff

Manchester United are appointing sports psychologist Sascha Lense to Ralf Rangnick's backroom team.

The 46-year-old will start work at Carrington later this week once his visa process is finalised, but he met the players for the first time on Monday. He will join the club in a position on Rangnick's coaching staff rather than coming under the medical department.

Lense had a low-key playing career that amounted to around 100 appearances in Bundesliga 2 in the 1990s and early 2000s, but he's worked under Rangnick at RB Leipzig.

His first prominent role as a sports psychologist was with Dynamo Dresden in 2014 and he was recruited by Rangnick to work at RB Leipzig from the start of the 2015/16 season.

Lense spent three years at Leipzig and was most recently employed in a similar role at Schalke. He is currently without a club which has made the process of a move to United smoother.

He is the second new face likely to join United's backroom team under Rangnick, with coach Chris Armas also expected to be appointed.

The 49-year-old American is out of work having been sacked as head coach of Toronto FC in Major League Soccer in July. He spent six years coaching at New York Red Bulls so his work is familiar to Rangnick.

Speaking last Friday, Rangnick said of potential coaching additions: “I will obviously try to find one, two, maybe three people who can join us in the one or two weeks but due to the Brexit regulations it's not too easy.

“Many of my former colleagues, no matter if it is video analysts or assistant coaches are in long-term contracts with big clubs so they are not available right now and we have to be a bit smart and clever and find the right people.

“I hope that we can get them in here in the next one or two weeks, but I cannot tell you any names.”
