Manchester United teen Jacob Carney signs loan deal with Irish League club

Portadown have continued their January recruitment drive with the loan signing of Manchester United youngster Jacob Carney.

The 19-year-old goalkeeper has joined the Danske Bank Premiership club for the remainder of the season.

Carney has been with United since the age of 16 and has regularly featured for the Red Devils' Under 18s and debuted for the U23s in January last year.

The teenage shot-stopper was also involved in United's Malaga training camp in 2020 where he worked alongside first-team stars David de Gea and Sergio Romero.

He joins recent arrivals Ben Tilney, Sean Warde and Gareth Buchanan who signed in the January window.

Portadown manager Matthew Tipton says he had "no hesitation" signing Carney after watching video footage of the teen in action.

"We have felt that we wanted to strengthen the goalkeeper department and through my connections with Alan Fettis at Man United we were offered Jacob and after watching his videos we had no hesitation in taking him in," Tipton told Portadown's website.

"Jacob has had experience playing in the rough & tumble of non league in England which was a massive positive for us.

"I must place on record my thanks to all at Manchester United for helping this move go through so smoothly."

Carney becomes the third player in the Portadown squad to have Manchester United connections

Goalkeeper Ben Pierce was once with the Red Devils, as well as clubs including West Bromwich Albion and Everton.

And forward Ruairi Croskery is another former United starlet.
