Romelu Lukaku is a major doubt for Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the United caretaker manager, revealed on Friday that Lukaku has been suffering with a foot injury this past week.

Lukaku’s national team manager, Roberto Martinez, does not expect the Belgium striker to play for United this weekend ahead of the international break.

The 25-year-old is in a rich vein of form at club level, having scored six goals in his last four games, and Solskjaer suggested he could recover in time for the weekend.

“He’s had a sore foot this week. He’s being assessed, so hopefully he’ll get through today,” the United caretaker said.

However, Martinez claimed that Lukaku would not play against Wolves ahead of Belgium’s forthcoming European Championship qualifiers against Russia and Cyprus.

“We have a good relationship with Manchester United,” he said. ”He can’t play there this weekend. But we have faith that his situation can change rapidly. Monday we decide [whether he plays for Belgium].”

United have suffered a raft of injuries of late but the likes of Anthony Martial, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard have trained this week and could play against Wolves.

“Phil Jones is back. There have been so many players out. Anthony is back, Ander has been training, Jesse has been training and we’ve got a decision to make tomorrow on who’s match fit.”

Ashley Young is suspended for Saturday’s FA Cup tie, while Alexis Sanchez remains sidelined with a knee ligament injury.

“He’s coming back on Sunday,” Solskjaer said on Sanchez. ”He’s not been on grass yet, he’s been seeing his people in Barcelona

“He’s still a few weeks away so if we get to round about Everton, City, Chelsea he’ll probably be available.”
