Manchester United targeting midfielder Liverpool have been scouting for over a year

Liverpool reportedly face competition from Manchester United in the race to sign Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The Reds continue to be linked with a host of midfielders after enduring a difficult Premier League campaign where they sit nine points off the Champions League places.

Jude Bellingham has been a name frequently mooted with a move to Anfield, after the Reds held a long-term interest in the 19-year-old, but cooled their interest in the Borussia Dortmund star last week after he was valued north of £100m. Nunes, 24, was named among the list of potential targets for Liverpool in the summer but Football Insider have now claimed that Jurgen Klopp's side faces competition from rivals Manchester United.

The Red Devils have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes under the guise of Erik ten Hag in his first season at Old Trafford as they remain on course to bring Champions League football back to the Theatre of Dreams.

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, central midfield is an area that the Dutchman is looking to strengthen meaning they could hijack the deal of 'long-term suitors' Liverpool.
