Manchester United target Dayot Upamecano advised to stay at RB Leipzig amid transfer links

German legend Lothar Matthaus has advised Dayot Upamecano to remain at RB Leipzig despite significant interest from a plethora of European giants.

Arsenal have been interested in the defender since last summer, while Manchester City and Manchester United are also reportedly keen.

The 21-year-old has made 29 appearances for Leipzig this season, helping the club to reach the Champions League quarter-finals after emphatically dispatching previous finalists Tottenham.

The German club also remain in the hunt for a first Bundesliga title and sat in third place before the league was suspended to the Covid-19 outbreak, five points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Former Bayern midfielder Matthaus - who made 150 appearances for Germany during a stellar playing career - believes Upamecano would benefit from another season or two with Leipzig.

"I can see him playing for all the big clubs when he gets more experience," he told Sky Sports in Germany.

"He's a young player, highly rated, fast, has a good positional game and uses his body well for a 21-year-old. But a year or two in Leipzig would not hurt him.

"Leipzig are a top team - one of the last eight remaining in the Champions League.

"I can still see one or two per cent where he can learn, but he's a huge player and that's why I'm not surprised that top clubs in Europe are after him."

Upamecano's current Leipzig contract is due to expire at the end of next season.
