Manchester United target Bruno Fernandes named in Sporting Lisbon squad to face Benfica

Bruno Fernandes has been named in the Sporting squad ahead of their fixture against Benfica on Friday night.

Manchester United target Fernandes is part of the 18-man squad which has been named by Silas for the Lisbon derby fixture at the Estádio José Alvalade.

Reports in Portugal suggested Fernandes could sign for United as early as Friday but his inclusion in the match-day squad indicates a deal still is yet to be agreed between the two clubs.

United are interested in a move for the 25-year-old midfielder following injuries to Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay and could yet complete a deal for his services ahead of the January transfer deadline on 31 January.

Speaking earlier in the week Sporting manager Silas said only a "catastrophe" would prevent Fernandes from playing for the club against Benfica on Friday.

"The only certainty I have is that Bruno will be [there]," he said.

"We have prepared the game with him, trained very well, he is an extraordinary player and is the best player in the league.

"Bruno is not worth that money, much more.

"He attacks and still kills himself to defend. There is no player who does what he does.

"When we have such a player it is normal for a lot of people to want him.

"Only if there is a catastrophe he will not be [playing on Friday]."
