Manchester United taking measures to avoid repeat of China pre-season postponement

Manchester United have taken extra measures to ensure they do not endure a repeat of the scenes which saw their last scheduled pre-season fixture in China postponed.

United return to China for the first time in three years next week when they face Tottenham in Shanghai in their fourth pre-season fixture of the 2019 tour.

Ahead of the match the club have taken measures to make sure the pitch in Shanghai is playable after what happened three years ago when the Manchester derby fixture against Man City was called off over the state of the pitch at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing.

In order to ensure the pitch is in the best condition possible for the match United have sent club staff out to check on the pitch four times since November.

As well as their own analysis of the pitch the club also arranged for weekly reports from International Champions Cup organisers Relevent to provide updates on the pitch.

Although the reports have all been good so far there are still slight concerns over the playing surface with rain showers and storms expected ahead of the match next week.

United groundsman Dave Lindop will also fly ahead of the team to make sure the pitch in Shanghai is in a suitable condition.

The last time United were due to play in China saw their match postponed in Beijing, however Borussia Dortmund also experienced difficulties during a recent pre-season fixture at a different stadium in Shanghai.
