Manchester United supporters get engaged at the Etihad during the final Spice Girls concert in Manchester

Manchester United supporters Rob Jeffries and Emily Reed are celebrating after getting engaged at the Spice Girls' final night in Manchester.

Rob had been planning to pop the question to his high school sweetheart for six months after he got tickets for the reunion tour as an anniversary present for Emily.

The Reds fan from Chester admits it pained him to carry out the proposal at the Etihad Stadium, the home of rival team Manchester City, but he made up for it afterwards by booking them into Hotel Football next to Old Trafford with a surprise delivery of champagne and flowers.

"As Manchester United supporters, it’s been tearing me apart to do it at the Etihad," he said.

"But I got to choose the hotel so waking up in the morning outside Old Trafford looking forward to our lives together is a good payoff to it!"

The couple were in the standing area in the middle of the pitch on Saturday night when the crowd parted so Rob could go down on one knee during the romantic ballad 2 Become 1.

"We got there early, and when Emily made the very long trek to the toilets I let others around know and they were all so helpful moving aside so I could get down on one knee!" he said.

"And then it was during 2 Become 1, after the second chorus where it goes quiet, that I popped the question.

"I’d been listening to it all week to get my timing right!"

Rob stuck to tradition by asking Emily's dad for her hand in marriage back on Boxing Day so had a difficult time keeping it secret for so long.

He told us: "Emily went to see the Spice Girls as a young girl so I wanted us to have this as a treat for our anniversary. But the moment I bought them, I knew I wanted to ask her there at the gig."

"I was stunned, shocked, disbelief but exceptionally happy,” said Emily.

Radio DJ Rob, 29, a presenter on Chester's 106.3, and Tesco store manager Emily, 28, started dating in June 2017 but knew each other from high school.

"In the last two years, Emily has helped make things in our lives happen in a really positive way, and I just couldn't imagine my life now without her," he said.

The previous night Lee Christie also got engaged to his partner Duane Watters at one of three Spice Girls dates in the city.

The girls invited Lee on stage to propose and he got down on one knee watched by Emma Bunton, Geri Horner, Mel B and Mel C and thousands of fans.
