Manchester United suffer Mason Greenwood injury blow

Manchester United are hopeful the injury that has forced Mason Greenwood out of the England Under-21 squad is not too serious.

The Young Lions depart for Slovenia on Tuesday afternoon to play three games in the group stages of the European Under-21 Championships, but Greenwood will now not be part of Aidy Boothroyd's squad.

With the Under-21s playing three group games in seven days between Thursday and Wednesday, the decision has been taken not to risk Greenwood.

Instead, he will be assessed by United's medical staff ahead of their return to Premier League action against Brighton at Old Trafford on Sunday, April 4.

Greenwood ended a goalscoring drought with the only goal of the game in United's 3-1 defeat to Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-final at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

That ended a run of just one goal in 26 games for United, but his all-round performances have been praised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently.

"His overall game has improved so much. Too many people are too concerned about stats and look just at assists and goals," Solskjaer said.

"His contribution to the team is way above what he was doing last season – except for the goals. And they will come. I don’t worry about that at all.

"Because we see him day in day out in training. He’s growing physically, he’s maturing in the way he’s playing, he’s holding the ball up, his link play... so I’m very pleased with him."

United have suffered from injuries in attack recently but Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani were involved against the Foxes on Sunday, although Marcus Rashford missed out with a foot injury.
