Manchester United suffer major injury blow for Arsenal clash on New Year's Day

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be without Scott McTominay for his side's Premier League clash with Arsenal on New Year's Day.

The Scott has been a key member of the squad at Old Trafford for the Norwegian this season and was forced to leave the stadium on crutches following the 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

Mikel Arteta's side host their fellow Europa League contenders at the Emirates Stadium on January 1 and the Gunners will be hoping to heap further misery on United to climb closer to a top four finish.

The Spaniard will be seeking his first victory as head coach after having watch Arsenal draw with Everton and Bournemouth in the first two games of his tenure in north London.

While Solskjaer may have claimed all three points by routing Newcastle but it came at a cost.

Scotland international McTominay will not be available to feature in the game against Arsenal next week if he has damaged his ligaments, as suspected by the United boss.

He picked up his injury during the first half and, having tried to run it off, was replaced by Paul Pogba at half-time - and he could be sidelined for an extended period.

The full extent of the injury is yet to be officially revealed but in his post-match press conference Solskjaer was already fearing the worst.

"He has done his ligament in the knee but we don’t know how bad," he said, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

"He has the biggest heart of the lot and played until half-time. We're not sure if he will be fit for Saturday. Probably not."

United face Burnley in two day's time before travelling to London to face Arsenal on the first day of 2020.

It is a significant blow to McTominay and United given the midfielder's role in a 1-1 draw with the Gunners earlier in the season.

He scored in that match and has been a bright spark for fans during some difficult moments in recent months.

United will need to hope that Pogba will be able to prove his fitness in time for the trip to London.

The Frenchman played 45 minutes on Boxing Day following his first appearance since September in a 2-0 loss to Watford before Christmas.
