Manchester United suffer fresh injury blow ahead of Chelsea clash

Manchester United have suffered a fresh injury blow ahead of this weekend's Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The two sides are looking to maintain their fine sequence of results recently, continuing their push to achieve a top-four finish and secure Champions League football next season.

However, United will have to do so with some notable absentees and have been handed another injury blow prior to the match.

Juan Mata was not in the matchday squad for Thursday's clash against Real Sociedad, despite featuring as a substitute against Newcastle United at the weekend, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed he will miss Sunday's match.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel compares Cavani and Giroud

"Juan unfortunately will be out for a couple of weeks. He missed tonight, yeah," he said following the result.

Midfield is a particular area of concern ahead of the clash, with Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek both doubts for Sunday's match, while Paul Pogba will remain sidelined for a number of weeks with a thigh problem.

"We hope that they can be available for the weekend, but I’m not sure. Paul is still out for a few weeks unfortunately.”

United also have experienced striker Edinson Cavani as an injury doubt ahead of this weekend's game, which may deny him a reunion with former Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel.

Daniel James may also miss the match after being substituted during the game against Real Sociedad, with the Wales international set to be assessed ahead of the game.

Should the aforementioned midfielders miss out, Fred and Nemanja Matic are likely to continue their partnership in midfield.
