Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood withdraws from England U21 squad

Manchester United have another injury concern after Mason Greenwood was forced to withdraw from England U21 duty with a back injury.

Greenwood has featured nine times this season for United, scoring his first senior goals against Astana and Rochdale last month.

His form last season for United's academy earned him a England U21 call-up in September, as he made his debut at that level in two second half substitute appearances against Turkey and Kosovo.

Greenwood, 18, started the 0-0 draw at AZ Alkmaar last week, and has come off the bench in both of United's last two Premier League games.

He played for 24 minutes as United were beaten by Newcastle at the weekend, finishing the game at St James' Park.

But now, he has withdrawn from representing England U21s against Solvenia and Austria this week, with the FA confirming the youngster had been replaced by Swansea's Bournemouth loanee Sam Surridge.

An FA statement read: "Swansea City pair Sam Surridge and Ben Wilmot have been called into the England MU21s squad to play Slovenia and Austria.

"Head coach Aidy Boothroyd has brought the duo in to replace Morgan Gibbs-White (back), Reiss Nelson (knee) and Mason Greenwood (back), who have all withdrawn injured."

United confirmed Greenwood will now remain at Carrington to receive treatment ahead of the Premier League clash with Liverpool in a fortnight.

He joins Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Diogo Dalot on United's injury list.
