Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani slams European Super League proposals

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has slammed the European Super League proposals that fell flat on their face last month.

United were among the six Premier League sides that signed up as founding members, with the Glazer family playing a big role in the push for the breakaway competition.

Fan backlash quickly led to the English clubs, along with AC Milan, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid, withdrawing from the proposals but Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid are yet to formally withdraw.

This week, UEFA confirmed a disciplinary investigation against those three clubs is underway and has warned they will take whatever action they feel is necessary.

Meanwhile, the English sides including United have reached a peace accord with UEFA and have brought an end to the fiasco.

While the whole concept has proven to be fiercely unpopular, few players themselves have spoken directly about the sequence of events.

However, Cavani has broken that trend in an interview with South American media and revealed he was concerned for the future of the game.

"When the Super League came around I told myself: 'That can't be possible - if it happens, what can we expect next?" He told DosDePunta.

"You mustn't deprive more modest teams the chance of playing in the Champions League. Or stop average clubs from dreaming of competing with the bigger ones, and having a place among the elite.

"You can't deny fans of these clubs the chance to have this experience."
