Manchester United statement in full as Liverpool game postponed after fan protests

Manchester United have released a statement following the decision to postpone the match against Liverpool.

The Reds were due to face their arch rivals in the Premier League at Old Trafford, but the game has not been called off due to protests both inside and outside the stadium.

Protests have been taking place outside Old Trafford, as the club’s fans voice their disapproval towards the owners, the Glazer family. Many fans managed to find their way onto the pitch, with one corner flag being taken and flares being set off.

The statement from Man United read: "Following discussion between the Police, The Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today.

"Discussions will now take place with the Premier League on a revised date for the fixture.

"Our fans are passionate about Manchester United, and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest.

"However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff, and the police in danger.

"We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations."

Liverpool as well as Man United were in the middle of the controversial European Super League plans last month, with the fallout still continuing.

The Reds, along with Man United, agreed to be one of 12 founding members of the proposed competition before pulling out less than 48 hours after the announcement.

For Liverpool’s home game against Newcastle last week, the majority of fans applauded the team bus as it arrived at Anfield with only a small number of people protesting against FSG.

However, there were different scenes at Old Trafford where thousands have gathered in protest against the Glazer family who own Man United.
