Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo insists he was 'nervous' before facing Newcastle on his big day

Ronaldo has spoken of his emotions before facing Newcastle United for his second Manchester United debut.

The Portuguese legend scored twice against the Magpies in a 4-1 rout at Old Trafford in front of a crowd of 72,732.

Ronaldo's big day only looked like being upstaged by Newcastle for about five minutes after Javier Manquillo's equaliser but he soon took control to score his second and put Man United back on track.

Ronaldo said: "When I started the game I was so nervous. I swear.

"But I think it was normal. Maybe I didn't show it but I was."

And reflecting on his performance, Ronaldo said after the game: "I didn't expect to score two, one maybe but not two.

"I have to appreciate what the fans did for me.

"The most important thing was the team and we played a high level.

"We played with maturity and intelligence and I am so proud of that."

Steve Bruce was also asked about Ronaldo afterwards and said: "If there is a genuine superstar among everyone, then this kid is with what he has achieved.

"We have witnessed it again today. He is something else."
