Manchester United star Paul Pogba's penalty run-up took longer than Usain Bolt 100m sprint

Paul Pogba's bizarre penalty technique attracted criticism and derision on social media after the Manchester United man missed his second penalty in five attempts against Everton.

Pogba dispatched the rebound to spare his blushes but attention turned to his approach after United leapfrogged their visitors in the table with a narrow 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

The World Cup winner's long, stuttered run-up, in which he took 28 marginal steps forward without ever really accelerating towards the ball, gave Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford a clue, the visting goalkeeper later revealed.

“When he (Pogba) did his run-up I knew where he was going to go and I saved it, but unfortunately it went back out,” he explained.

And fans jumped on social media to poke fun at Pogba, whose run-up lasted longer than the 9.58 seconds Usain Bolt took to break the 100metre world record in Berlin at the World Athletics Championships in 2009.

Team-mate Ashley Young said afterwards: “I don’t care if he takes 62 steps, as long as he scores.”

But manager Mourinho admitted he thinks a change of approach might be necessary.

"The thing I like is the desire to take it," the United boss said. "I don't like Mickey Mouses: fragile, afraid to go, I don't take penalties. I don't like that, I like the player that I want to take it.

"Paul wants to take and that for me is fantastic. If he misses, he misses. Can he improve his penalty? I think he can.

"I think the goalkeepers don't move and they are waiting for his decision so I think he probably has to learn from that. But for me the most important thing is next time we have a penalty he wants to go again."
