Manchester United star Mason Greenwood delivers verdict on Lionel Messi transfer amid Man City links

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has admitted it would be 'amazing' to face Lionel Messi in the Premier League.

The Argentina forward has told Barcelona he wants to leave the club this summer and is yet to report for pre-season.

Messi is trying to leave the Nou Camp for free although La Liga have supported Barcelona's case that any departure would have to be triggered by paying his £630million release clause.

Manchester City are the favourites amongst most bookmakers to sign Messi and reunite with Pep Guardiola.

However, the close relationship between Guardiola, the City hierarchy and Barcelona has made the deal even more complicated, without considering the financial impact of any transfer.

With speculation rife that Messi could still make the move to England and City, Greenwood was quizzed on how he would feel coming up against the six-time Ballon d'Or winner.

"It would be amazing to even come up against him," Greenwood said when speaking to the press on international duty.

"All young footballers know about Messi as everyone knows so to be on the same pitch, playing against him would be another dream come true, not just for me but for everyone really.

"For someone that high profile to come to the Premier League, it's a really big thing."

Greenwood was called into the England senior squad for the first time ahead of their Nations League matches and against Iceland (Saturday) and Denmark (Tuesday).
