Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo breaks all-time Champions League record

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo will become the all-time UEFA Champions League appearance record holder against Villarreal this evening.

The 36-year-old was named in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's starting XI for the group stage clash in what will be his 178th appearance in the competition.

It means Ronaldo will surpass his former Real Madrid team-mate, ex-Spain international goalkeeper Iker Casillas, in the overall standings.

Ronaldo, who has won the competition on five separate occasions, is playing in his 19th consecutive season in Europe's elite competition having represented United, Real Madrid and Juventus during that spell.

His 135 goals also make him the Champions League's all-time leading goalscorer - 15 clear of nearest rival Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo scored in the opening game defeat to Young Boys and will be keen to inspire the Red Devils to victory when Villarreal visit Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Unai Emery's side, of course, beat United in last season's Europa League final and revenge will be at the forefront of United's mind as both sides go in search of their first victory in this season's Champions League.

Ronaldo will be flanked by Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and the returning Jadon Sancho in a star-studded attacking line-up.
