Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes nominated for Premier League Goal of the Month award

Manchester United architect-in-chief Bruno Fernandes has been nominated for the Premier League Goal of the Month award for August.

The former Sporting Lisbon man, who joined United in January last year, made the dream start to the new campaign, netting an opening day hat-trick to help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side hammer Leeds United 5-1 at Old Trafford.

Fernandes scored United's first, third and fourth goals of the afternoon to ensure they ended the first weekend of the season top of the table.

It is the goal that clinched Fernandes his hat-trick that has been nominated for the award, with his third strike of the contest without doubt the most impressive.

Latching onto an outstanding long-ball forward from Swedish defender Victor Lindelof, the Portugal international brought the ball down under his spell and lashed home a fierce, first-time right-footed effort high into the roof of the net, leaving Leeds goalkeeper Ilan Meslier with no chance at all.

It was a stunning finish and one that was certainly worthy of sealing a hat-trick.

But if the United ace, who has since been joined at Old Trafford by fellow countryman Cristiano Ronaldo, is to win the Goal of the Month gong for August, he has got to see off some tough competition.

A total of eight strikes have been nominated for the award, with the goal United conceded against Leeds - a sweet strike from Luke Ayling - also in contention.

The six remaining nominees are Aston Villa duo John McGinn and Danny Ings, Leeds' Raphinha, Jamie Vardy of Leicester City, Liverpool winger Sadio Mane and Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
