Manchester United stance on Sandro Tonali and Lionel Messi transfer claims

Manchester United have rubbished claims from Brescia president Massimo Cellino they made an offer for Sandro Tonali, on the verge of signing for AC Milan.

Cellino, the former owner of Leeds United, claimed United made an offer for Tonali that was €10million more than Milan's bid but a United spokesperson clarified Cellino's comments are not true.

Cellino, once banned by the Football Association for breaking agent regulations, said: "A dozen days ago, I refused an offer from Manchester United which was €10m more than the offer from AC Milan. But when the player found out about this possibility, he didn't want to know anything more."

Tonali, 20, is already a full Italy international and was linked with a move to Inter Milan but is about to join their city rivals.

Earlier this summer, United expressed their irritation over an inaccurate report in Portugal that said the Wolves striker Raul Jimenez was 'on his way to United'.

Portuguese public service broadcaster RTP wrote that Jimenez, 29, was in line to move to United as Wolves had agreed a deal to sign Braga forward Paulinho. However, senior United sources told the MEN the report was inaccurate and the Jimenez article could not be found on the RTP sport landing page.

In the five-paragraph story, Jimenez's 'is on his way to Manchester United' was not mentioned until the fourth paragraph but Jimenez stlll trended on Twitter in the UK.

United sources also laughed off an Italian journalist's claim they had contacted Lionel Messi's father.
