Manchester United stance on James Garner and Teden Mengi futures amid more loan interest

Teden Mengi and James Garner could remain at their respective loan clubs for the whole of next season, amid strong interest in the Manchester United youth duo.

MEN Sport understands Derby boss Wayne Rooney is keen to keep Mengi on loan for another year, while Nottingham Forest are eager to secure Garner’s services for next season.

Mengi, who recently celebrated his 19th birthday, played nine times for Derby after joining them on January transfer deadline day, helping Rooney’s men stay in the Championship by the skin of their teeth.

Garner enjoyed even greater success at Forest following his loan switch from Watford in January, immediately breaking into the first team at the City Ground and winning admirers with his midfield displays.

Garner, 20, scored four goals in 20 Forest appearances to prompt interest from Chris Hughton in tying him down for an extra year on loan.

It’s understood Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is considering bringing both players into his first team squad at United following their loan stints. But both could also head out on loan again, depending on the depth Solskjaer is able to add in their respective positions.

United could look for Premier League loans for both players to continue their development.

But as things stand it looks likely that Mengi and Garner will rejoin the United senior squad for pre-season after the summer break, train with Solskjaer's men and play in some friendly fixtures. A decision is then likely to be taken on their short-term futures.

Mengi signed a contract extension in March, keeping him at Old Trafford until June 2024 with the option for an additional year. Garner's contract with the club expires in June 2022.
